38°. Haamiah העמיה. Its attribute (God, the hope of all the children of the earth). He corresponds to the great name of God Agla אֶגְלָא (God threefold and one). According to the cabalists, this name is drawn from that mysterious verse of Scripture אתה גיבר לעולם אדני, which signifies in French: Thou art the strong God through eternity (1). It is composed of the first letters of these four words, beginning from right to left (2). The ray of this genius begins from the 186th degree of the sphere to the 190th, inclusively, corresponding to the 19th decade and to the genius named Serucuth. He presides over the following days: 26 April, 7 July, 17 September, 28 November, 8 February. These divine names are invoked to acquire all the treasures of heaven and earth; one must recite the 9th verse of psalm 90. (Quoniam tu es Domine spes mea : altissimum posuisti refugium tuum.) The cabalists say that this psalm serves against thunderbolts, weapons, ferocious animals, and infernal spirits. (See the cabala of the psalms.) This genius governs all religious worship, and all that pertains to God; he protects all who seek the truth. The contrary genius governs error and lying, and influences all who have no principle of religion. (1) See Agrippa, in the 3rd book of his Occult Philosophy, p. 41. At The Hague, 1727. It is likewise found in Kircher, Œdipus Ægyptiacus, volume 2, p. 115. (2) By this means you have the key to the 72 Hebrew verses which are written around the talismans of the 72 genii, which are found in the cabalistic sphere. Each of these verses contains the name of God and the attribute of the genius to which it corresponds. The abbé de Villars relates marvellous things, speaking of the great name AGLA, in his work entitled the Comte de Gabalis (see the third dialogue). The best edition is that of Amsterdam, at Jacques Lejeune's, in 1700. He affirms that with this name one works an infinity of marvels, even when pronounced by a profane mouth; he maintains that those who wish to convince themselves of the truth must exalt their imagination and their faith, then turn toward the east, observing in this regard all that is indicated in the cabalistic rite... The wise philosophers say that this name was revealed to Jacob, when he saw in a dream the ladder of 72 rungs, with the 72 angels who went up and down toward the place called the gate of heaven, and they maintain that it was by it that Joseph was delivered from his brothers, and that he interpreted dreams, notably that of Pharaoh. The cabalists write this name upon the mysterious wand which is used in cabalistic experiments, and here is how it is made: one must cut a branch grown in the same year, of virgin hazel or filbert, that is to say, the tree must never have borne fruit, and no branch must ever have been cut or broken, which is easily found in a shrub of new growth; it is cut between eleven and twelve o'clock at night, under influences favourable to the experiment one wishes to perform; one must have a new knife, never before used, and draw it upward while cutting the wand, and pronounce certain words, the face turned toward the east; then it must be blessed, and there must be written on the thickest end the name AGLA, in the middle the word ON, and on the thinnest end the name TETRAGRAMMATON; these three names must each be accompanied by a cross and their mysterious character; and when they are about to proceed to evocations, they strike the air in a cross with this wand, toward the four quarters of the world beginning with the east, then toward the south, afterward toward the west, and toward the north, pronouncing each time what follows: I......, I conjure thee, Genius......, to obey me at once; by the living God, by the true God, by the holy God, and they strike the air each time, forming the cross. As everyone knows the analogy of the circular figure with unity, which is the perfect symbol of God, it is for this reason that one must enclose oneself within this mysterious character and in the midst of a triangle, each time one proceeds to evocations. (See the Frontispiece.)

Le texte de Lenain

38°. Haamiah .
